After researching and designing a Low Allergen garden at the RHS Chelsea Flower show in 2020 for the National Pollen and Aerobiology Research Unit she had a eureka moment. Healing and therapeutic gardens need to have low allergen planting otherwise there is potential to bring unnecessary discomfort and stress to patients that already have enough to deal with. This is a sunny sheltered garden with bedroom terraces that have views over the courtyard and the main social hub café leading straight out onto its own large terrace. This space needed to have a strong structure to look good throughout the year as well as being a lovely space to be in during the warmer months. I was also keen that the planting I used didn’t add to patients problems by causing hay-fever or other respiratory problems, therefore all the planting used in this space is low-allergen. Three of the plinths display glass bell jars containing historic Royal Worcester pieces, which are painted with horticultural designs. The planting surrounding the plinths includes some of the plants and foliage featured on the Royal Worcester pieces. Two further plinths display bespoke Terrariums, I based the design on an original Wardian Case. The main planting palette using muted greens/whites/creams and plants with a delicate frothy appearance depicting the element of 'Air' including Calamagrostis x acutiflora 'Karl Foerster' Digitalis purpurea 'Alba' and Geranium sylvaticum 'Alba'. This contrasted with a streak of deep blue Salvia nemorosa 'Caradonna' and scarlet Geum 'Mrs Bradshaw' which flashes through representing the flow of free energy through the garden. They have added a contemporary extension to their Victorian house to give them a large inside/outside social space with flexibility to have family celebrations when the children are home as well as a place to potter and relax at the end of a busy working day. They enjoy gardening and would like to have an interesting outside space that is easy to keep looking good, with a choice of areas to both sit or work at different times of the day.
